August 2024 wild makeover tip: blackbirds

Help blackbirds. This familiar garden bird has been declining since 2020 due to a virus, especially in London where 39% have disappeared. Maintain a lawn to help them access worms, and cover borders with leaves or bark to let them forage for insects. Use a ground feeder (with a guard to keep cats out) and offer their favourite foods, such as fruit, mealworms and suet. Take part in BTO's survey to help monitor the situation.
